Cleaner Air

Breathe a purer air thanks to a new self-cleaning wall at Tronox’s Thann, France site

During the last two decades, Tronox has been committed to the development of environmental photocatalysts for cleaner air as evidenced by our patented formulations and innovation of CristalACTiV™ ultrafine TiO2 products. The Specialty Chemicals and Materials business has not only developed a large CristalACTiV™ photocatalytic product portfolio but has demonstrated that this technology works at a real-life scale.

As part of recent maintenance work around our Thann, France site, where CristalACTiV™ products are manufactured, we have painted the exterior wall of an industrial building with a photocatalytic coating. This mineral coating, supplied by Keimfarben, has been formulated with one of our photocatalytic CristalACTiV™ TiO2 products, the key ingredient for depollution and self-cleaning functionality. Activated by the sunlight, our CristalACTiV™ TiO2 will help break down air pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) that touch the surface, as well as the dirt that sticks to it.

The thought behind painting a photocatalytic wall is that it will help reduce air pollution and purify the air for the people who walk through this heavy traffic area. While breathing, pollution enters the lungs, potentially causing small annoyances like coughing or major diseases. With photocatalysts lowering the pollution level, it can contribute to reducing health issues. Together with the improvement of air quality, this active wall has self-cleaning properties, which reduce maintenance frequency and lead to overall cost savings.

This is the first display on a Tronox industrial building, but we have plans for more. Our CristalACTiV™ products can provide photocatalytic properties to a variety of construction materials and coatings to create a cleaner world. Tronox is proud to deliver products contributing to a better world as part of our sustainability commitment.
